Last winter, there was a banner hanging at the easternmost end of the former Schnucks property at 11925 Manchester announcing that Mosaic Modern Fusion was "Coming in June 2011." Well, it must be June.
To say the arrival of Mosaic is "long-awaited" is putting it mildly. Several years ago, Kirkwood residents will remember a similar "Mosaic Coming Soon" banner hanging in the window at the corner of W. Argonne and N. Clay for what seemed like forever. That Mosaic never happened; this one will.
The soft opening has been slated for September 29; the Grand Opening is tentatively scheduled for October 20. (Quick sidebar: Relish finds it curious that some restaurants are now announcing "soft" openings. Maybe we're missing something here, but a soft opening, as we understand it, is unnanounced, unadvertised, and under the radar. Now if Mosaic were to open prior to the 29th, that would be a soft opening. But we quibble...hell, we're just glad the place is finally opening.)
Diners familiar with the flagship Mosaic (at 1001 Washington, downtown) will see many similar design touches: a granite-topped, racetrack bar; an open kitchen; a chef's table (this one seats 12); and the namesake mosaic water wall. Tom Niemeier of SPACE Architectural Design, one of the city's preeeminent restaurant designers, has tied the restaurant, bar, and perimeter areas together with what's been described as a "stylized ribbon." (Relish has not yet seen the project.) Outdoor curtains and fabric sails will lure passers-by to the patio that wraps the 4000 SF end-cap space.
Along with Mosaic Group Executive Chef Ben Lester, Chef de Cuisine Andrew Jennrich (one sixtyblue in Chicago) will supervise the launch. The duo will debut a new fall menu, including a Black Pepper Papardelle, to coincide with the opening,.
Relish did note one twist, something a bit different for a restaurant in a bedroom community: a late-night Happy Hour, 10 p.m - 1 a.m., Thurs-Sat. The daytime Happy Hour has unusual hours as well, 2 p.m. - 7 p.m., Mon-Sat.
This will be the third location for Mosaic. Non-travelers may not realize that a scaled-down version opened last October on Concourse A at the airport.
The Des Peres location will be open for lunch, dinner, and weekend brunch, where one beacon will surely be the Bloody Mary Bar.
Now get out there and enjoy the sunmmer...it is June, isn't it?
