Whenever three similar businesses in the same block fall under the same ownership umbrella, the possibility for cannibalization not only exists, but is probable. Suchmay have been the case for Mosaic Bistro Market, co-owned by Frank Schmitz, brother Claus, and sister Ellen, who also manages it. In varying degrees, The Schmitz' also own BARcelona and BocciBar (as well as the Mosaic tapas restaurants downtown and on Concourse A at the airport).
BARcelona (34 N. Central) is the Cenrtal Av mothership, and has been packing the house (and sidewalk) for years. Mosaic Bistro Market (14 N. Central) opened last September, and BocciBar (16 N. Central) opened in April of this year.
The Bistro Market, with its spartan lines and orange-colored walls, is the most contemporary and (we'll say it) the edgiest of the three. Those who frequent Central Av. may have noticed that the minute the wide-open and more-approachable BocciBar opened, it seemed to pull many Bistro Market diners along with it.
When you couple that with the impending opening of the Mosaic in Des Peres, Frank Schmitz told Relish that "in Clayton, customers familiar with the other Mosaic's were expecting that same experience and the same tapas-style fare...we needed to lessen the confusion."
So Mosaic Bistro Market will emerge almost immeriately as Coastal Bistro & Bar, a seafood and oyster restaurant. Schmitz said it would be
"seafood-focused, but not solely seafood," and that the portions will tend toward the "smaller plate." The existing bar will become a raw bar, with oysters--from all coasts--priced at $1.50- $2.00 per. Schmitz said to expect some "low-country fare" as well and that the retooled restaurant will again be managed by his sister Ellen, adding that "this type of restaurant suits her perfectly."
New signage will be erected today. Pending one inspection, Coastal will open either tonight or Tuesday.
UPDATE: Effective late Friday afternoon, Coastal is now open for business.
